Carolyn and Ashley
How did you discover your passion for travelling?
“We both caught the travel bug in middle school after taking trips to Paris and London. Since then, we can’t kick it!”
What’s the most horrible experience that you’ve had on the road?
“We’ve been so lucky (knock on wood) that neither of us have ever experienced something truly horrible outside of flight delays and the norm. Oh, and the time we got locked in a basement in Vienna in the middle of the night? That wasn’t great.”
What’s the best travel experience that you’ve ever had?
“Any time we travel together normally results in the most fun stories. Our first trip abroad together was back in 2008. It was only 48 hours in London, but it’s still one of our favorites! More recently, we’d probably have to say the time we stayed in a chateau in the Loire Valley ranks as one of our very favorite experiences.”
What’s the biggest realization that you’ve got out of travelling?
“Our curiosity about other cultures has certainly grown exponentially since we began traveling, and we never tire of going somewhere new. Traveling has also made us more open minded, brave, and independent, for sure.”
What keeps you going? What keeps you motivated?
“We run into this roadblock A LOT. It can be really hard to explain our passion to non-travelers! Traveling can be emotionally, physically, and mentally draining, but we’re re-invigorated each time we visit somewhere new. Our desire to learn about and experience cultures different than our own keeps us motivated.”
This is a silly and hypothetical one. If you would be given a chance to travel with a popular person or a celebrity, who would it be and why?
“Since most of our travels these days include our significant others, we’d need a couple who could keep up with the banter. Maybe Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield? Or Beyoncé and Jay-Z, but only so we could use their yacht.”
Where’s your favourite place in this planet and why?
“So tough! Since we’ve both lived in France, we find ourselves gravitating towards Paris. I think it will always be a really special place to both of us for different reasons.”
What’s your best tip for newbie traveller?
“Don’t overbook yourselves! We’ve fallen victim to the jammed-packed itinerary, and it can really work against you. We recommend doing a little pre-trip research and choosing a small handful of things that you absolutely want to check off your list, but leave the rest up to chance. Aimlessly wandering can lead you some of the best finds!”
What’s the funniest and silliest thing you’ve ever done while travelling?
“Taking a cross-country road trip in Ireland without valid drivers licenses definitely wasn’t our smartest move.”
How do you fund your travels?
“We simply make it a priority in our budgets. We forgo a lot of the “normal” things people our age spend money on. If you prioritize travel over other aspects of your life, you’d be surprised just how quickly it becomes affordable!”
How do you keep yourself safe on your travels?
“Neither of us have been solo travelers, which definitely helps in keeping us safe. We’re also both former New Yorkers, so we’re pretty aware of our surroundings and take notice of any red flags.”
What do you think about yourself?
We’re two best friends who don’t take ourselves too seriously! We’re professional bar hoppers, pub crawlers, and food testers, and you’ll never see us zipping around, checking things off a list of “must-sees.”
“Through our site, we aim to inspire fellow travelers and those suffering from extreme cases of wanderlust. We recognize that our travel memories don’t just come from detailed itineraries, tour groups, and planned excursions—they also come from unexpected moments and once-in-a-lifetime experiences. We want everyone to realize that travel should always be exciting and the task of planning a vacation should never be overwhelming, daunting, or frustrating.” – Ashley and Carolyn of The Lazy Travelers
