Meet the Nomads: Adam Groffman
On his way back to Boston (from Iceland) he came up with a list of questions, I also just came about a few days ago.
- Could I travel and not work? This is my biggest question too :-)
- Where would I go?
- How much would it cost?
- Would I be able to live like that?
- What would I learn/do?
- When would I go?
Here's Flip's short interview with Adam.
How did you discover your passion for travelling?
"My family taught me a lot about traveling. We got to take several overseas trips growing up, so it pretty much instilled the idea that I could travel anywhere into my mind. Plus, both my Dad and my older sister both did long-term trips when they were my age."
What’s the most horrible experience that you’ve had on the road?
"Most horrible experience? I wouldn't say it was horrible, but there were 2 different trips where I realized I couldn't travel with a certain type of person. Food and money are the biggest challenges while traveling and if your ideas don't mesh well with your travel buddy, you're gonna have problems."
What’s the most outstanding travel experience that you’ve ever had?
"There have been a few places I just had the chance to visit for only a few days but I absolutely loved my time there. Most recently, that was in Iceland, where I realized how much I'd rather be traveling than rushing back to work."
What’s the biggest realization that you’ve got out of travelling?
"As simple as it sounds, the best realization I've had while traveling has just been the fact that it's so easy to travel."
What keeps you motivated?
"I love randomness and travel provides the best opportunity to constantly embrace it. New people, new places, constant change--those are some of the things that scare people away from travel, but for me, I seem to thrive on it!"
This is a silly and hypothetical one. If you would be given a chance to travel with a popular person or a celebrity, who would it be and why?
"Traveling with a dignitary would certainly be fun and interesting. As far as a specific person, I really couldn't say."
What could stop you from travelling?
"Commitment."
Among the places that you’ve been to, which one fascinated you the most?
"Krakow, Poland was one of my first solo trips so I learned a lot. Plus the city was absolutely stunning. Australia has fascinated me so much, that I've vowed to go back."
What's the best travel advice that you could give for a novice traveler like me?
"Keep traveling! Once you go back to getting a job, a place to stay, etc, it's easy to push off your next vacation or trip. You just have to commit to taking vacations and be willing to dish out the money! It's almost always worth it."
What do you think about yourself?
"I don't know how to answer this, but here's to trying: I guess I'm thankful and feel very fortunate that I'm able to do what I love to do even if it means slaving in an office cubicle for the most part of the year so that I can travel."
