Indra Chowk market is one of the most colorful and one of the busiest markets that I have ever seen in my travels. If you’re traveling to Kathmandu and if you’ll be staying in Thamel then you surely wouldn’t miss this market as you’ll see this on your way to Basantapur Durbar Square.
Indra Chowk Market is full of traditional and modern day clothing, shoes, brassware, pots and other clay sculptures that will surely look great in your garden and a lot more. Most of the buildings around the area are also old (though some of them are not well maintained anymore). If you look closely at the buildings then you’ll see the beautiful windows handcrafted by the Newari people.
Explore the narrow alleys, visit the temple inside Indra Chowk or just sit in one corner and do people watching and you’ll surely have a great time in this market. If you’re also thinking of shopping for souvenirs then this is a great place to do that as most of the goods being sold here are considerably cheaper than the ones being sold in Thamel. You won’t find though the hippie clothes and art products such as paintings that are commonly found in Thamel but for brassware, textile, women’s accessories, incense and other stuff, then you’ll definitely find some great bargains here.
Here are some pictures taken on my last visit to Indra Chowk market:
