Swayambunath – Temple on a Hill in Kathmandu Valley

Swayambunath is one of the most popular places to visit in Kathmandu Valley. It’s also a very important and sacred religious site for Buddhist pilgrims just like Boudhanath. Getting here from Thamel is quite easy as you can just go here on foot for around 30 minutes.

Swayambunath is also known as the Monkey Temple due to the presence of so many monkeys in the area. You’ll immediately notice the presence of monkeys once you reach the foot of the hill. Most of them are just loitering around the temple grounds or sitting on top of the railings waiting for some locals or foreigners to give them food. Be aware though that these monkeys are still wild monkeys and may bite so it’s advisable not to give them any food.

Once you reach the top of the hill, you have to climb the steep stairs up to where the stupa is. The steps can sometimes be slippery especially when it’s raining so make sure that you hold on to the railings.

Once you reach the top, you’ll see the stupa with the famous drawing of Buddha Eyes which symbolizes enlightenment. Around the main stupa are various religious temples where pilgrims often make offerings such as food, candles, flowers and of course prayers.

You can also see a huge portion of Kathamandu down below which is really a nice sight. At the back side, you could see some forested hills and numerous eagles flying around.

Here are some pictures of my visit to Swayambunath:
