Photo Essay: Yi Peng Celebration at Wat Pantao Chiang Mai

Yi Peng is being celebrated simultaneously in the whole city of Chiang Mai. A lot of temples, districts, areas in Old City and other places in Chiang Mai have a variety of programs and events. One of the most photogenic and surreal experience is the one in Wat Pantao. Wat Pantao is located inside the Old City, just a couple of minutes walk from Tha Pae gate.

Here are some pictures I’ve taken in Wat Pantao when I was there on the 2013 Yi Peng festival:

Yi Peng Celebration at Wat Pantao Chiang Mai

While the monks were lighting up their lanterns and releasing them to the sky, a monk was explaining to the visitors about the history and significance of Yi Peng. They also gave away free lanterns to the visitors of the temple. There’s no fee if you want to go to this temple next Yi Peng. But be sure to go there early as it gets full of people and the temple complex can only accommodate a few visitors.

This is one of the most magical and almost thing I have ever seen in my life and I’m so glad that I went to Wat Pantao that day. Be sure to drop a visit on the next Yi Peng this coming November 2014. Also, don’t miss the lantern releasing ceremony at Mae Jo University.

Have you attended any Yi Peng celebrations in Chiang Mai? Feel free to share some tips and recommendations.
