Meet the Nomads – Ronald Robbins of Active Planet Travels

Active Planet Travels is one of the blogs that I added to my list of daily reads. If you want to know some information about various destinations in USA then you should also check this blog out.

Ron, the author and owner of Active Planet Travels shares a lot of helpful tips about various destinations in his home country. He’s also fond of the outdoors so expect a lot of helpful tips about outdoor travels.

Ron started traveling when he was 19 and used to work as a wildlife keeper in Florida and also as a white water rafting tour guide in West Virginia where he lived in a tent for three and a half months. He also worked on a cruise ship and got the chance to visit and learn about the various islands of Hawaii. Ron plans to travel the world in the near future.

How did you discover your passion for traveling?

“I remember the moment like it was yesterday; I just bought my hammock from a local shop on the island of Maui along with a 6 pack of Kona beers. Walking towards the Pacific Ocean, I found a deserted beach where I strapped a hammock underneath a couple of low hanging trees. It was then, listening to the waves crashing in, the breeze blowing through the trees, feeling my skin soaking in the sun and the cool beer going down my throat that I decided I wanted to do nothing but travel for a living.”

What’s the most horrible experience that you’ve had on the road?

“I’ve been very fortunate so far along my travels. I wouldn’t classify anything as “horrible” but if I must mention one incident that had gone wrong it would be getting ripped off $170 down in Central America. In the end, it all worked out though as I got my money refunded by the company from their employee along with free tickets to the local hot springs.”

What’s the best travel experience that you’ve ever had?

“Again, hard to say as there are so many but if I could collectively say something it would have to be the overwhelming amount of hospitality and kindness people show me while I’m in their homeland.”

What’s the biggest realization that you’ve got out of travelling?

“Hands down would be the lifestyles people live. It makes me extremely grateful for what I have and what I grew up with. While some countries are fruitful, others are stricken with poverty and struggle to survive. It’s a real head turner when you tell friends and family back home just how different our lives are from those of other countries. But needless to say, no matter what “status” people are living they never cease to amaze me with their hospitality.”

What keeps you going? What keeps you motivated?

“I would have to say that the biggest thing that keeps me going is honestly the inspiration I drive into others to live their lives. I have family, friends and total strangers that look at nomads like myself and realize that anything is possible and any dream is obtainable as long as you work hard at it and believe in yourself.”

This is a silly and hypothetical one. If you would be given a chance to travel with a popular person or a celebrity, who would it be and why?

“Interesting question but if I had to choose one person to travel the world with, it would be my Dad. He may not be the most popular person or labeled as a ‘celebrity’ to the rest of the world but when I think about it, he’s the most famous person I know and the one person that would be absolutely hilarious to watch munch on a plate of deep fried tarantulas!”

Where’s your favorite place in this planet and why?

“My favorite place on this planet would have to be Aspen, Colorado. It’s not directly labeled as a “budget friendly” place but after working a few seasons out there it was by far the hardest place for me to leave and, if I were to settle down, that’s probably where it would be. You’re constantly on vacation.

The mountain biking, rock climbing, caving, white water rafting, snowboarding and just about any other outdoor activity is world class, extremely addicting and tons of fun. On top of that the town is amazing; you’re struck with that small ski-town vibe where making new friends is easy especially since everyone there is like minded.”

What’s your best tip for newbie traveller?

“My best tip for a newbie traveler is to just get out there and do it. Stop trying to wait for ‘the perfect time’ or for you to ‘have enough money’. I’ve learned over time that if you really want to travel, you can. All it takes is a bit of commitment, an open mind and a should waiting for adventure!”

What’s the funniest and silliest thing you’ve ever done while travelling?

“The silliest thing I’ve ever done? I would have to say when I used to work on a cruise ship out in Hawaii I would stand 2 decks above everyone and make odd animal noises at people just to see what there response was. You’ll be surprised how many people start looking for a goat on a cruise ship…hahaha”

How do you keep yourself safe on your travels?

“I tend to travel a little rugged and find myself in ‘sticky situations’ quite often but if I were to rely on one thing, it would be to not veer too far out of my comfort zone and to use common sense. Don’t get me wrong, I love extreme sports but I clearly know the limits of my skills and my body. I push it a little, but not to much to hurt myself. As far as common sense goes, I stay out of dark alleyways around midnight, I don’t take candy from strangers and I always go out with a friend if I plan on having a night on the town.”

What do you think about yourself?

“What a way to put me on the spotlight! haha Let’s just say I love the outdoors (you’ll never find this guy sitting inside for lengthy periods of time), I enjoy eating odd foods and getting new experiences plus I like to have fun! Life is all about your experience. When it comes down to it, I want to be able to lay in my bed, take my final breath of life and say I have absolutely NO regrets.”

“The Active Planet Travels Blog is focused on promoting those hole in the wall places all over the world. Currently, I am traveling to Asia, where I will backpacking from country to country, stopping by and taking our time to experience what it’s really like to live in these exotic locations. After that, I’m off for the world record: I’d like to become the youngest man to travel to every country in the world! :-D” – Ron Robbins of Active Planet Travels
