Meet the Nomads – Nick Knowles of On My Walkabout

On My Walkabout is one of the newest blog that I’m following. It’s about Nick’s travel in various places within and outside his country while maintaining his career. He started his blog as a means to share his knowledge about travel to his friends.

Get to know more about Nick and visit his blog at On My Walkabout.

But before you click away, check out my short interview with Nick.

How did you discover your passion for travelling?

“I’ve never known a time when I wasn’t travelling in some respect so it just seems natural to me. I was lucky enough as a kid to travel all over the US with my dad and my parents had me whitewater rafting before I was 10 years old. I grew up thinking that kind of stuff was normal. Adrenaline and travel are just a part of me.”

What’s the most horrible experience that you’ve had on the road?

“I was in St. Lucia enjoying fruity drinks on the beach, living the good life and got a punch in the stomach also known as the worst stomach virus I’ve ever had. Put me down for several days. Lesson: Ice in drinks comes from local tap water.”

What’s the best travel experience that you’ve ever had?

“Heading out to Machu Picchu in the early morning when the clouds and fog were covering everything. As the sun came up and a slight breeze drew the clouds aside revealing the ancient city. It was like a dramatic scene from a movie. Very mystical.”

What’s the biggest realization that you’ve got out of travelling?

“That for some reason most people think travel is a hard thing to do or something that is a rarity…like that one vacation of a lifetime type of thing. I’ve made it my mission to help people break that mold.”

What keeps you going? What keeps you motivated?

“Pure adrenaline. Na, I really don’t need motivation it’s just a part of my life, like brushing my teeth or taking a shower….it’s just something I do. If anything I have to stay motivated to work to afford travel. Getting to that next destination is my motivation to work and I find it the more stressful than travel. It’s all about perception.”

This is a silly and hypothetical one. If you would be given a chance to travel with a popular person or a celebrity, who would it be and why?

“Half the time I would like to travel with Colin Farrel getting piss drunk in pubs and bar fighting and the other half with the Dalai Lama chilling out and expounding on the nature of life, love, and what makes each of us so amazingly awesome.”

Where’s your favourite place in this planet and why?

“My favorite place is the next place. But if I had to pick a place that awed me the most it would be Peru. I’d built it up in my mind since I was a kid seeing pictures in magazines and when I got there it met and exceeded my expectations.”

What’s your best tip for newbie traveller?

“Don’t try to plan everything. Things never go completely as planned so go with the flow, revel in the chaos, and just go for it.”

What’s the funniest and silliest thing you’ve ever done while travelling?

“I’m constantly doing ridiculous things where ever I travel from making out with random historical statues for a funny picture to impromptu thumb wrestling battles with cute foreign waitresses. Life’s to short to be serious all the time.”

What do you think about yourself?

“Can pure awesomeness really be fully defined? I jump out of planes and off bridges, eat bugs, drink beer with locals, act ridiculous, never turn down a challenge, and smile while doing it.”

  1. Great interview. I especially like the part about not trying to plan everything — sometimes, the best things happen without a plan!
