How did you discover your passion for travelling?
“Travel is always something I had on my mind to do. When I was starting out at work, around age 18, everybody older than me told me to go travelling while I was young. I saved some money up and went to Rome for a weekend on my own to see how I got on with it. As it turns out it was fantastic. The seed was planted, and travel became a priority ever since.”
What’s the most horrible experience that you’ve had on the road?
“In Cambodia, literally on the road. As I was heading to Siem Reap I was caught up in a massive scam attempt. Several times over 3 hours (the drive should have taken 45 minutes) on route to my hostel they attempted things to get money out of me. Full story is here: Thailand and Cambodia Border Scams.
What’s the best travel experience that you’ve ever had?
“Connecting with people from around the world. I dated this woman in Japan, and she’s my wife now, so I guess that would have to be the best.”
What’s the biggest realization that you’ve got out of travelling?
“That the world is a small place filled with big culture and too much consumption. Oddly I’ve not learnt much about myself though, but have had reassurance on who I am, my values, interests, etc.”
What keeps you going? What keeps you motivated?
“The fact in this question is wrong for me. It’s not a leisure activity, but a lifestyle choice. I do it very slowly to the point where it looks like I’m emigrated somewhere so the tiredness (although it happens from days of sight seeing) doesn’t usually occur. General curiosity about the world is what keeps me going though.”
This is a silly and hypothetical one. If you would be given a chance to travel with a popular person or a celebrity, who would it be and why?
“A comedian of some sort as humour makes travel a whole lot more fun. Billy Connelly always seems to have good travel stories in his acts so he would be my choice.”
Where’s your favourite place in this planet and why?
“Anywhere without a lot of light pollution at night. Because the stars are worth seeing wherever you are. The Australian outback and mountains of Japan are the best places I’ve been for this so far. It’s a shame these places are usually full of insects!”
What’s your best tip for newbie traveller?
“Make a plan of all the things you want to see and do, and then throw it away as it’s not as important as improvising and going with what you think is right and interesting at the time when you are out there travelling.”
What’s the funniest and silliest thing you’ve ever done while travelling?
“Silliest thing is handing over money to buy a 25 year old toyota painted like the mystery machine and thinking it’s going to get me across Australia. Funniest thing was doing it.”
What do you think about yourself?
“I used to think I was weird and different, but after travelling I think I’m normal and a balanced individual!”
“AdventureRob is a travel blog featuring funny stories, travel advice and photography. Occasionally some of it is worth reading too!” – Rob”
