But before you click away, check out my short interview with Paula.
How did you discover your passion for travelling?
“When I had a class under Professor Felipe De Leon, Jr. for my Tourism elective (subject was on Philippine Arts & Culture). I thought I knew my country but was heavily challenged in this class. After that, traveling wasn’t just about having fun and seeing sights for me anymore. They have to mean.
What’s the most horrible experience that you’ve had on the road?
“Honestly, I can’t remember any. I think when you’re having the time of your life, you’ll hardly notice these things.”
What’s the best travel experience that you’ve ever had?
“Probably the hardest question to answer for me. It’s so hard to compare because each experience is different. But I would say I like my travels most when it involves giving back to the community we visit. Oh, and my birthday trip to Yosemite National Park (California) is one of my most favorite travels!”
What’s the biggest realization that you’ve got out of travelling?
“I hope you don’t mind me answering three:
1. We are all different, but we are more the same.
2. Traveling really opens your mind as well as your heart.
3. Traveling should be an avenue to give more than take more.”
What keeps you going? What keeps you motivated?
“Even after crossing out my target places, the list never gets shorter. On the contrary, it gets longer every time. So that’s what motivates me, because I know there’s so much to see and learn about this world, and about my country. And of course, nothing is better than learning things like these through first hand experience. Did I mention my interests keep growing and growing too? It started out with scuba diving and then it became hiking and then traveling in general and now birding…the list gets longer and longer which means I have a LOT to do and accomplish in one place alone!”
This is a silly and hypothetical one. If you would be given a chance to travel with a popular person or a celebrity, who would it be and why?
“Bear Grylls so I could learn a trick or two from him on survival, and David Attenborough so I could join his coolest wildlife adventures and see the most amazing creatures on Earth! If Steve Irwin were alive, I would have loved to meet him, too!”
Where’s your favourite place in this planet and why?
“No matter how much I love traveling, I’d still say HOME is my favorite place. Nothing beats the feeling of plopping on my own bed and seeing people I love after a long day.”
What’s your best tip for newbie traveller?
“Research is key, especially when it comes to the culture of those you’re visiting. Being spontaneous is nice, but truth is, oftentimes, you need research (though you don’t always have to follow it!) to maximize your destination and avoid inefficiency. ”
Also, there’s no need to rush. It’s not the quantity, but the quality of your travels. You don’t have to squeeze four countries in two weeks when there’s so much to see in one country alone. Your competition should only be with yourself, after all.
What’s the funniest and silliest thing you’ve ever done while travelling?
“Hmm…I’d say when I flew to Cebu for this rock formations I saw in an adventure book. I don’t rock climb though I used to do a lot of wall climbing and was told rock climbing is often easier than wall climbing. So when I saw photos of this rock climbing spot in Cebu, I immediately booked tickets! When we got there, we only made it through the first or the second rock! After that, it was reaaallly challenging because the formations were in 90 degree angles already! At first, I thought it was only I having a tough time, but when I realized my boyfriend was also giving up, I knew it wasn’t just my physical skills anymore. Haha! Epic fail 😀 But we did have a great time watching the locals do it!”
What do you think about yourself?
“Someone who won’t stop traveling — EVER! Haha :D”
“Our Restless Feet is a blog I made with my boyfriend and travel partner Charlie. It’s supposedly a travel guide for the different provinces of the Philippines and a few international destinations. Because we travel a lot and started the blog years after we started traveling together, there’s so much backlog…so forgive us for hardly updating our site. 😛 – Paula Peralejo
