Top Three Beach Holiday Destinations in the Greek Islands

The Greek Islands are a beach lover’s paradise. Secluded sandy coves are skirted by ocean the colour of midday sky on one side and pine, lemon and olive groves releasing inviting fragrances on the other. The sun seems to always be shining and the temperature is anything between a balmy 22 and a rather hot 35. With so many Greek Islands to choose from – there are more than six thousand – how do you know which one is right for you? If you really want the perfect beach holiday, then here are our top three suggestions.

Top Three Beach Holiday Destinations in the Greek Islands

Rhodes is one of the largest Greek Islands and therefore has a well-established infrastructure and some of the region’s best hotels, restaurants and bars. Rhodes has a rich history, showcased well in the UNESCO listed old town of the same name, it has a rugged and rural interior and some pristine beaches which have remained picture-perfect despite heavy tourism. Obviously being one of the largest Greek Islands, Rhodes has plenty of beaches too choose from. If you want lots of action from your Rhodes holidays, head to Faliraki, where water sports are the order of the day. You can hire jetskis, go for a banana boat ride of even rent a windsurfer. If you want a more secluded beach, head to the coastline between Gennadi and Prasonisi. This stretch of coastline is largely unexplored and exploited and the beaches are quite magical as a result. On The Beach offers Rhodes holidays throughout the year so you can take advantage of the island’s enviable climate.

KefaloniaKefalonia is the largest of the Ionian Islands in Western Greece. This is a truly picturesque island with sweeping wild flower meadows, steep mountains, sheer cliffs plunging to azure ocean, golden sand beaches and pastel and white-walled fishing villages. The island has several peninsulas that create beautiful hidden coves, sheltered from the wind and waves. One of the most beautiful beaches is Myrtos Beach. This one-mile stretch of dazzling white pebbles abutted by steep pine clad hills and a sheer headland is mesmerising.

Crete is overrun with spectacular beaches and along with the island’s intriguing history and legend it is one of the best Greek Islands to holiday on. Chania on the northern coast in the west of the island has some of Greece’s best beaches; our top picks are Balos and Elafoinissos. White sand, turquoise ocean and rugged mountains forming the backdrop make these two beaches almost too good to be true. Add some rustic castles and a complete lack of people and it’s not hard to see why these beaches are so perfect.
