Meet the Nomads – Gareth Leonard

If you’re into slow travel and knowing more about a particular place, culture and it’s people then you will definitely enjoy reading own by Gareth Leonard.

I’ve recently embraced slow travel myself by spending weeks and sometimes months in a particular place to enjoy it more and to immerse myself more in the local culture.

Gareth blogs about his travels around South America and provides a variety of information about various places which you will definitely find very helpful.

Here’s my short interview with Gareth.

Meet the Nomads - Gareth Leonard

How did you discover your passion for travelling?

“I watched Passport to Paris (starring Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen) from a hotel room in Athens, Greece while on a break from studying abroad in London. The whole thing completely blew my mind. I’ve been travelling ever since. True story.”

What’s the most horrible experience that you’ve had on the road?

“Saying goodbye.”

What’s the best travel experience that you’ve ever had?

‘Never an easy question to answer without sounding like a travel tool but… Bartending in Buenos Aires, dancing Salsa in Medellin, working with monkeys in Ecuador, hiking Machu Picchu in Peru and tasting all the Latin flavor along the way.”

Gareth Leonard

What’s the biggest realization that you’ve got out of travelling?

“Family and friends are everything, most “problems” are nothing and anything is possible.’

What keeps you going? What keeps you motivated?

“When I’m old and gray, sitting on my front porch teaching my grandkids about life I want to have some stories and lessons to reference. I think I explain it a lot better here: Long-Term Travel vs Life-Time Relationships.”

This is a silly and hypothetical one. If you would be given a chance to travel with a popular person or a celebrity, who would it be and why?

“Dead or alive? Dead, I’d go jetsetting around the Mediterranean with Frank Sinatra. Alive, I’d go to the moon with Richard Branson. Why? Inspiration, adventure and maybe even a job opportunity.”

Gareth Leonard

Where’s your favourite place in this planet and why?

“To be honest, it’s my grandparent’s living room on Christmas day. Travel wise, that’s a lot harder… sunset in Cartagena, Santorini and San Diego are special and sunrise in Medellin, London and Buenos Aires are also pretty magical for completely different reasons.”

What’s your best tip for newbie traveller?

“Think of your biggest dream, visualize living that dream and then don’t stop until you do it. Plus, always have protection… sun, sex and insurance.”

What’s the funniest and silliest thing you’ve ever done while travelling?

“Trying to hold a conversation in Spanish the first 6 months I was in Argentina.”

Gareth Leonard

What do you think about yourself?

“I think an ex-girlfriend summed it up nicely… I’m an asshole with a positive attitude and big heart. Otherwise, I’d consider myself an ambitious, outgoing guy who’s in route to becoming the man he wants to be.”

“It’s an orgy of awesomeness that focuses on exploring the world beyond typical travel experiences. I want to see exactly what it takes to become part of a foreign community and to truly understand a place through the people and culture that define it. The goal is to travel deeper one mission at a time.” – Gareth Leonard
