I’m not exactly a shopper but if there’s one thing that I like about travelling, its visiting markets. I think I have mentioned it a couple of times already :-).
I love visiting markets because I learn so much about prices and I get to see a variety of items that I don’t usually see at home or in my own neighborhood.
Let’s start with the local markets:
Gaya Weekend Market
The weekend market in Jalan Gaya is being held every Sunday. It’s a long stretch of stalls selling a variety of stuff. There’s a lot of souvenir shirts, local crafts, local food, household items and even pets being sold in this market.
Pasar Kraftangan is located at the harbour front of Kota Kinabalu City. The main landmark would be Le Meridien. You’ll find a lot of souvenir items in this place.
Pasar Ikan Masin
Just right beside, Pasar kraftangan. You’ll find a lot of local foods including dried seafoods in this market.
This wet market can be found at the back of the first two markets that I mentioned. If you’re interested to buy local produce or fresh seafood, this is the best places to go to. There’re also food stall grilling fresh seafood beside the wet market section.
Pasar Besar Kota Kinabalu
A few steps away from Pasar Ikan Masin is Pasar Besar. It has a variety of stuff that you can find in the first few markets that I mentioned above.
Probably one of the popular shopping malls in the city, Warisan Square has some restaurants, coffee shops, and outdoor boutiques of some popular brands.
If you’re looking for some gadgets like tablets, phones, cameras etc, you’ll find a lot of them here.
Tang Dynasty Mall & Parksons Department Store
A shopping mall with Parksons department store and Giant Supermarket. This is a bit far from Jalan Gaya but if you’re hostel is located in Sadung Area, this one would be one of the nearest supermarkets to you. This mall is adjacent to Wawasan Bus Terminal.
Surya Shopping Mall
This is the newest shopping malls in Kota Kinabalu City and the nearest to Jalan Gaya. If you’re looking for branded items, this is the best place to go to. Alternatively, there’s also an outdoor shop near this mall (close to Jesselton Port) where you can find a variety of outdoor equipment.
