I received a forwarded email from a friend about an alarming concern… mining Palawan (you can read the letter reposted by James) and it sickened me. I am not an environmentalist, although I do advocate conservation and sustainability. I was just not that well informed when I was younger or in short I was just stupid and selfish. I always thought that my own consumption will not affect everyone.
I was wrong.
I’d like to ask you to take some time and check out this website “No to Mining Palawan” and sign the petition, your signature will definitely make a difference. But before you do that I’d like to ask you to do one more thing…
Reflect on:
1. Your Energy Consumption: Do you really need to use your laptop while watching TV? Do you really need to turn on all lights in your house at the same time? Please reflect on your energy consumption. It matters.
2. Your Purchases: Do you really need to buy your 50th pair of shoes while the 45 of them are just collecting dust in your closet? Do you really need to buy the 4th Gen IPhone because your 3rd Gen does not look trendy anymore? Please reflect on your purchases. It matters.
3. Plastics: is it possible to reuse plastic bags in your home? Can you use it as your trash bag instead of buying the black trash bags in the supermarket? Is it possible to use reusable water bottle instead of the disposable? Will it be fine to refuse plastic bag from supermarkets or other stores and just carry your purchases in your own bags? It matters.
Why does it matter? For every time we buy something, someone will create a replacement or a new product. For them to create new products they’ll be needing raw materials and where will that raw material come from?
Damn right!!!
We may be able to save Palawan for now if we all signed this petition. But after a few years, it still has to give way as a source of materials for your new shoes inside a new paper bag.
I’m not an environment activist, I’m just a traveller but this concern brings me to tears.
I want clean oceans so I could swim.
I want clean air so I could breathe.
I want green forests so I could explore.
Don’t you want the same things?
The fight to save Palawan from mining is a fight to save us from ourselves. We can only save Palawan and more places if we only consume what we need.

excuse the ads, im trying to remove the mining ads…
Yeah I’m all for purchasing less material things and investing on experiences, that way it’ll make life better and keep life on Earth longer.
Nice point Flip! sapul!
Right you are. Had been thinking along those same lines since my college days.
Signed up.
I’m not really a person to buy something new just because the old item is a little old. And this post just gave me one more reason to continue doing that.
You hit it bai. I’ll still go the campaign, “No to Mining in Palawan”. Hindi pa na man ako naka explore dyan ng maige. Thanks to this bro.:-). Eradicate Red Tape. Identify sites that are protected areas.
I guess it really showsthat you have lack of info regarding this matter. Mayve because you said you are a traveller, but still it is unfair to the industry to be judged without knowing the real issue. The statement “mining palawan” is in itself very vague, which would lead people to think that the whole palawan will be mined which is definitely stretching the truth a thousand miles over.
Hi Allan,
Thanks for the comment. I didnt say mining the ENTIRE Palawan, as everybody knows the mining is happening on the South. Plus if you read my article again, I’m encouraging consumers to re-think their consumption because mining happens to supply the demand of consumers. And if you read it carefully, you’ll see that it’s not an article about blaming someone but rather an article directed to everyone including myself, as I am part of the consumer group.
Im in ^_^
Hi to all! Let’s not take a one sided approach into this petition to ban mining in Palawan. be informed about mining and the efforts of the mining industry for sustainable development. research studies that we do continually seek to minimize the effects on the environment. just like you, we want to protect the only place we live in. we mine because there is a need. maybe we need to check the word compromise to solve this issue.
i agree with you… all of us should work hand in hand to find a solution to the world’s environmental problems
