Biggest Beach Party in Asia

I just had dinner and really felt full. I felt the urge to smoke to relieve myself of the stuffy feeling caused by overeating. As I was staring at the sky, I noticed that it was full moon.

A couple of years back, I was restless in my apartment in Bangkok. I grabbed something to read to ease the boredom and I came across a tourist magazine. As I was reading it, I came across an article about the Full Moon Party. I’ve never heard of it before. I checked the schedule and decided to go there. Me and my friend immediately packed some clothes and went to the Southern bus station.

After more than five hours on the bus, we finally arrived in Surathani, the jump off point to Koh Phangan where the Full Moon Party is being staged monthly.

We asked our tuktuk driver to take us to the ferry station but he said that there were no night ferries so we have to wait until the next morning. I did not buy it though. We walked to the dock and saw some tourists. There’s still one ferry (well, more of a fishing boat) that would go to that island before midnight. We booked our tickets and walked around to kill some time.

After a couple of hours waiting, we finally left the shores of Surathani. The boat was packed with people from all over the world. It was weird to hear different languages in such a small place. One conversation that struck me was this guy who was telling his backpacking adventures in Indonesia. I was a bit envious, I’ve only been to Thailand and Singapore during that time.

After five hours, we finally arrived in Koh Phangan. It was still dark when we got there. We took a tuktuk and went to Haad Rin. Everything was still closed, hostels, restaurants, stores etc. We arrived too early with no accommodation waiting for us.

As soon as the sun rose, we began walking and found an accommodation that fitted our budget. We took a shower and rested for awhile. The island seemed to be a dead place in the morning, but it’s a different story at night.

The beach was packed with people!!!

The loud music of all sorts, the overflowing alcohol and an unlimited supply of cigarettes made me think that it was really a paradise for party goers.

Some facts about the Full Moon Party from Wikipedia

“The Full Moon Party is an all-night beach party that takes place in Haad Rin on the island of Koh Phangan, Thailand on the night of every full moon.

The first Full Moon Party was improvised at a wooden disco not far from the beach in 1985 for giving thanks to about 20-30 travelers. The Full Moon Party gained fame quickly through word of mouth, and the event now draws a crowd about 20,000-30,000 every full moon evening. The party carries on until the sun rises the next day. All the bars on the sunrise beach of Haad Rin town stay open and play music such as R&B, drum and bass, house, dance and reggae.”

This is the biggest and wildest party I’ve ever been to in my whole life. Nothing has topped it off my list until now.

Our list of activities in Haad Rin:
1. Eat
2. Drink
3. Party
4. Sleep

And we did that for one whole week. I hate to admit this though, it was really tiring. We booked our tickets back to Bangkok after a week with big smiles on our faces.

Full Moon Party is indeed the Biggest Beach Party in Asia.
